A 12-year-old from Port Moody, B.C., has started an online petition asking that cigarette filters be part of the single-use plastics ban expected from Ottawa in 2021. Aniela Guzikowski has picked up about 7,000 cigarette butts from beaches and streets in the past year.

I hate seeing cigarette butts everywhere. Its trashy. Smoking in general is trashy, but our streets don’t have to reflect that.

What do filters do apart from polluting our streets? They were invented as a marketing ploy to promote light cigarettes after the surgeon general warnings in the ’60s. Ban them or make them out of paper.
